Beyond the Pantry: Partnerships & Strategy to Support Student Success

This session will provide examples from work at The University of Akron related to early intervention, food insecurity, emergency grants, financial education, and community engagement. This session will provide participants the opportunity to reflect on successes from the past academic year and goals for the upcoming year. Through small group conversation and large group sharing, participants will learn new ideas and tangible solutions to student barriers or campus hurdles. Using the concept of the Wellness Wheel, this presentation will highlight data that indicates the correlation between holistic wellness and wellness – which contribute to retention.

Building upon the eight elements of the Wellness Wheel, this presentation with highlight best practices for moving your support beyond food insecurity and toward a culture of holistic wellness care. Amid the pandemic, the needs of students were highlighted in unique ways. Using intentionality, partnerships, and strategy, learn how to assess these needs of students and enact solutions for your campus. As civic engagement leaders, we have the power to address student barriers through amplified voices, data-driven solutions, and collaboration. This working session will highlight the recent expansion of the student advocacy and support office at The University of Akron, ZipAssist, and will offer time for participant sharing and individual reflection. As you leave this session you will be equipped with new ideas, affirmation of the great work you’re doing, and action steps for program enhancement in the next six months.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to identify two to three tangible solutions/ideas for their campus:

  • By attending this presentation, participants will be able to identify two to three goals for their program, to accomplish/address within six months.
  • By attending this presentation, participants will understand the Wellness Wheel.
  • By attending this presentation, participants will understand the correlation between wellness and student success/persistence.
