Teaching Public Scholarship: Lessons from Two Practitioner-Scholars Webinar Recording

Sponsored by NC Campus Engagement and Ohio Campus Compact

Public teaching and scholarship bridges the academy and the community. This type of teaching and scholarship can involve pedagogies such as service-learning or community-based participatory research or include a scholar writing and speaking out about important public issues in ways that are accessible and impactful. During this conversation, we will learn from two scholars who dedicated their careers to public teaching and scholarship. We will discuss the benefits, challenges (especially in the current context), and recommendations for early-career scholars or scholars who are interested in beginning this journey. Featured scholars: Harvey J. Graff is Professor Emeritus of English and History, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Literacy Studies, and Academy Professor at Ohio State University. Author of books on literacy and history of literacy; children and youth; urban history; and interdisciplinarity, he is now writing Reconstructing the “Uni-versity” from the Ashes of the ‘Multi- and Mega-versity” Spoma Jovanovic is Professor Emerita, Communication Studies, University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She collaborates on community initiatives and activist strategies to enhance dialogue and creative action. Her books include Democracy, Dialogue and Community Action: Truth and Reconciliation in Greensboro and Expression in Contested Public Spaces: Free Speech and Civic Engagement.
