11:30 am to 1:00 pm Engaged Campus Awards Luncheon
Connecting our campuses and our communities in challenging (and changing) times
We live in challenging and changing times. Major disruptions in our economic, social and political structures have led to questions about the purpose and meaning of many of our institutions including our colleges and universities. This upheaval can cause stress, conflict and uncertainty. Yet, challenge and change also can spark creativity and innovation. Following the presentation of our awards and recognition of Civic Action Plans, keynote speaker Kent Koth will explore several emerging trends in campus and community engagement that offer significant promise for transforming our campuses, our local communities and our nation.
Attendees can register as individuals for $35 or purchase a table of 8 for $250. Awardees and one guest will be invited to attend free of charge. See the tickets for more information.
AWARDS NOMINATIONS ARE DUE MARCH 30, 2018. LEARN MORE.
1:30-3:30 pm Deep Dive Workshop
Place-based community engagement as a way of transforming campus and community
Widely known through the work of the Harlem Children’s Zone and the federal government’s Promise and Choice Neighborhood programs, geographically specific community engagement initiatives have the potential to positively address the challenges of inequity and injustice within our communities. While we may be familiar with these types of place-based initiatives from non-profit organizations or governmental grants, less is known about this type of strategy in higher education. Through a presentation of a recent national study and book on place-based community engagement in higher education and a discussion with several leaders of place-based efforts in higher education in Iowa, this session will explore the potential for this strategy to transform campuses and communities.
